Five pairs of Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, Georgian chairs - and one ladder-back - take in the scenery at Maine's Popham Beach - the site of the oldest English settlement in North America. The pair in the left middle ground are slightly "out of synch", a humorous reference to the artist and his wife. The lighthouse, rock ledge island, and rolling surf, as well as the clouds generated by the Newfoundland current offshore, give this painting the clarity and coolness of summer in coastal Maine.
