In vivid autumnal sunshine, a grand piano contemplates 19th century tombstones and an ancient vine-covered tree in Beaufort, North Carolina. An ornamental iron fence on the left foreground gives way to scarlet foliage on the right. A meandering tidal creek winds its way to the sea. A reefed sailing ship enters the harbor, past the lighthouse. Some viewers see an allegorical aspect to this painting, although the artist had no consciousness of the juxtaposed images having a particular meaning. |
