In a colorful montage, this painting alludes to the rocky "cathedraled" island near the English Channel. The artist contrived images of the water, the stone steps, the ancient chapel at the base of the mont, and the Gothic structure on top. The fascination was the secreted garden high in the mont, protected from the inquisitive by a rustic gate of saplings and boards. The iron work over the well gave rise to the black lines which provide a counterpoint to the color. |
