Inspired by light from the skylight in the studio striking one of the African masks, the artist painted a dramatic symphony of red, purple, blue, gold and green. The entire palette is summarized in the crystal vase of glads. The partially portrayed Queen Anne chairs balance the Dogon mask and the Bambara figure. The rococo mirror is the one into which the artist looks to reverse the painting he is working on to discern compositional, coloristic and value problems.
