Sails, pennants, St. Mark’s Square in purples, turquoise, yellow, and gold—a magical evocation of Venice. To echo the curved domes of the cathedral above, the artist added wheels to the stylized gondolas, a compositional device that takes the painting into Stilton’s poetic world of charming impossibilities. |
