This painting introduced the Blue Emerald series, which eventually numbered over 40. The under-painting of this first version is based on low tide at Kettle Cove Beach near Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Bold symbols in essentially primary colors and gold leaf give an active counterpoint to the serenity beneath. The challenge for the artist was to create “symbols” devoid of any particular meaning or association. |
