Vertical rectangles suggest African textiles. In addition to the large emeralds, the artist also added topazes. Inscribed within the gold leaf rectangles are figures and primitive machinery, perhaps inspired by African gold weights in bronze. There is an affinity to African carved objects, such as granary doors and ceremonial stools.
