When the Stiltons visited Venice in November of 2002, their oldest son Matthew had just begun walking. The artist decided beforehand that staying in a hotel would be impossible. So they ended up having the entire floor of a Gothic palazzo with five marble balconies overlooking the Rialto Bridge. Saturated in sea, in color, sounds, and serenity, the whole visit was one of pure poetry, and Matthew had miles of interior space to roam, at “home” and in the museums, and outside in St. Mark’s Square. This small watercolor captures the mood perfectly. |
