"The colors from the trip to Venice a month before I started this canvas emerged with full force, like a peacock in St. Mark’s Square (not to malign the multitude of pigeons). This composite architectural fantasy draws the viewer up one of the several exterior staircases into the “pleasure dome” that Henry B. Plant “decreed” (to misquote Coleridge). Stretching a full quarter mile along the Hillsborough River, I marveled at the many eclectic eccentricities this architectural gem contains. This image in paint and gold leaf shimmers in scintillating hues. It was auctioned to raise funds for restoration in 2003, and appeared on the cover of the preview party’s invitations."
