"The under-painting of “Emergence” was a sunset in rosy plum hues seen on Madeira Beach. It was supposed to be the ground for a trio painting, featuring a piano, a cello, and a violin. Then, in the quiet of the winter months (yes, in Florida, which can have penetrating cold and long nights) I felt like painting woodwind sounds. The idea coincided with a commission from composer Noel Stevens to paint his woodwind quintet called “Toot Suite”. I painted small watercolors for each “story” in the suite, but the brilliance of the piece and the woodwinds inspired me to depict the sounds as if they were in nature (as Charles Burchfield and Arthur Dove did in the previous century)."
