"I actually painted this for a client who needed two related paintings on either side of a window in a formal room. I changed it three times before ending up with this version, which is cloudy and muted by sea fog (the patron looked at this and said it was “sad,” and purchased two other pieces which were quite different). But this is the way Venice looked when I had been there a few months before. Interestingly, the Dolomite Mountain range was not visible the entire time we were there, but there it is in the painting! If I ever came close to Kokoshka, whom I always admired, it is here."
