"There is something about this small painting that makes me think of the painted walls of ancient Pompeii, especially the Roman numerals in sequence at the lower right—and the shadowy silhouetted figures of families. The layers of impasto paint, glazed and brushed over, give an antique ambience. The deep sapphire blues and dark amethyst contrasts with the reds, yellows, and stone greens." |
