"This is the right panel of an unusual diptych; the left is horizontal rather than vertical. The painting was commissioned by a “Supermom,” which had created the most ideal house I had ever seen designed for a family. She wanted a “family portrait,” not in terms of individual likenesses, but of their activities. Although the left panel is more “female” (mother and daughter) and the right more “male” (father and son), certain elements relate back and forth—notably the soccer balls, the cards, and the beach. A large gold key in the left panel signifies that the mother is the “key” to the family. This panel shows the son kicking a soccer ball, the daughter’s claw-footed bathtub, the bricks that cover the kitchen walls, the wrought iron railing the family designed for the mezzanine, a 50’s Plymouth (the father owns a Chrysler dealership), the poker hand, and part of the mother’s quilt collection hanging between two palms. The guitar is the musical element that they all share; in the left panel cd’s and 45 rpm records fly into the sky. This had to be one of the most difficult yet rewarding commissions I have ever painted!"
