"Sometimes I start with specific colors; in this case something very old, like ancient dark wood, charred by age, gold, and the colors used in ancient Russian icons. As I worked into the random rectangles of gold leaf, something northern emerged, something that seemed Scandinavian. The stylus depicted ships, royal medieval looking figures, runic symbols, domed architecture, and geometric designs. I was puzzled as to what had appeared, and then I recognized “the story”. When we visited a friend in Stockholm, I had some exceptionally vivid perceptions. She lived near an earthen home c. A.D. 1000. At that point, in time, Constantinople had become the “2nd Rome“, and the Vikings brought home Byzantine coins (found in their grave sites). I’ve always imagined what they would have thought of Hagia Sophia and the wonders of that city. To me, the forested Baltic coast south of Stockholm was so “enchanted”, I almost expected to see Viking ships coming back from long voyages. In the cathedral in Old Stockholm the floor contained stones that had been inscribed with figures and ships. Somehow, with no conscious reference that I am aware of, these images came out of these mysteriously ancient colors and shapes, like a historical kaleidoscope".
